Approximately 65 percent of class V students do not know how to read a class II textbook in their mother tongue, 45 percent don’t know subtraction and almost 81 percent can’t read or write simple sentences in English, according to the Annual Status of Education Report for 2009 that was compiled by the NGO Pratham Foundation in Delhi.

The eighth edition of VIT Engineering Entrance Examination was conducted by the VIT University last weekend. VIT chancellor, G. Vishwanathan said that the number of students who applied for the entrance examination at 231 centers across the country was 1 57, 554. “We are accommodating the demands of foreign students by setting up exam centers at Dubai, Riyadh and Singapore” he said.
